Chiffon, Lace, and Studs! (outfit)

Saturday, February 27, 2010

I have to say that I was super excited get the ASOS oversized tunic in the mail. I was unsure about the fit at first because I was wondering, "would this be too baggy or to oversized?" The answer is no, it is oversized but, I don't feel like I'm in a tent when I have it on. The chiffon fabric is soft but very thin so, be be sure to grab a good tank to go underneath. I liked the idea of the monochrome look so I kept the whole look  black and white. On my bottom half I'm playing with textures by mixing lace and studs. I think it looks unique but chic at the same time. I have to give the 2 string jane boots a big thumbs up as well. My only two criticisms are that the leather near the bottom of the heel bunches up but, its not uncomfortable, just annoying and, that the bottom of the shoes have no grip. The soles are thick and sturdy but, these definitely need a trip to the cobbler because I nearly slipped walking on carpet.

Item of the week: Liquid/Wet Look Leggings

This weeks item of the week is liquid leggings. I love liquid or wet look leggings. For us girls that like to wear just leggings and t-shirts I think that these leggings are a great way to add interesting, unique touch to an outfit. For a more chic look I could definitely see these with a dressier tunic and a great pair of heels. The leggings featured above are Macy's and Your Clothing's respectfully. The pair from Macy's are currently on sell for $23.80 so get them while you can. Do you own a pair of liquid leggings? How do you wear yours?

Hipster Tiffster (outfit)

Friday, February 26, 2010

This is my favorite outfit right now. I literally have been wearing this to school as much as I can get away with lately.I usually wear a different variation of this outfit to school because it’s easy to put together when I don’t have a lot of time in the morning. I don’t always wear the plaid shirt and jean jacket but, a t-shirt, jacket or sweater, leggings, a circle scarf and boots are definitely a must for a quick outfit (at least for me). My sister says this outfit looks western and one of my bestest friends says I look like a hipster. I don't know about any of that;I just like it. The jacket is Guess and the plaid shirt is Eddie Bauer both via the Village Discount (thrift store). I did a post on them before that you can check out here. Also the white shirt is from Asos Curve.

The necklace that I'm wearing is Hope Marian by Lizzie Fortunato Jewels for UrbanOutfitters. Wherever I go people think I made it because it's made from braided and twisted fabric with lug nuts and various other metals thrown it. It was $50 dollars but I picked it up on sale for $20. The scarf is the American Apparel circle scarf. It was featured not to long ago as the item of the week and I absolutely love it. I really do wear it nearly everyday. I also have it in acid wash. The book bag I'm wearing is the Kid Robot one I wear to school everyday. I adore this book bag so much because I love the cute face on the front but, also because I snagged it for 50% off. Although i love this bag I can't wait for school to be over so that I can stop lugging it everywhere. Finally the boots I just got in the mail yesterday from Evans via Ebay. I will be doing a video soon about how to snag good things off of ebay so, look out for that. Oh and the leggings are Torrid.

Here's a random picture of me trying on the jean jacket and plaid shirt at the thrift store! It's been a perfect match since then!

Tiffany and the City: Adventures of a Fat Shopaholic. Too Fat to Fly?

Wednesday, February 24, 2010

Hello, thanks to an idea brought to me by Cid of Chunky Curlz here is the first  installment of Tiffany and the City: Adventures of a Fat Shopaholic. I find often find myself stuck in a lot of sticky situations and although these may not always be about fashion I hope you guys can relate.

If you follow me on twitter you know that for spring break at the end of March I will be in New York for a little over a week. I was extremely excited. By excited I mean that I had already planned some activities to do while I was there; I had even planned what I was going wear on the plane. Then a big fat snag was put in my plans. If you don’t know, film maker Kevin Smith was recently thrown off a Southwest airlines plane for being too fat. After the story was released it had been discovered that Kevin Smith was unjustly thrown off the plane because he in fact could fit in his assigned seat fine and in addition neither of the women sitting beside him complained about him invading their personal space.
For some reason though I was still horrified. My heart felt like in was in my feet. I almost might have felt it thumping down there but, I was to consumed by the prickly nervous feeling that was traveling through my body and the salty tears that were about to fall from my eyes and on to my cheeks.
At that moment I was realizing that I weigh well over 300 pounds and that when I ride public transit my arm does go over into the next seat a bit. My mother had only allotted $600 for the trip or about $200 for airfare and $400 for me to spend while I was in New York City. Being the shopaholic that I am I did not want to cut into my spending money and I definitely didn’t want to be anywhere for eight days with only $200 dollars because two seats would have been about $400. So, instead of getting practical and researching a better and cheaper way to fly I went into my moms room and cried. When I say cried I mean like a loud cry fully equipped with sniffles, moans, and whining.
I have been called fat a countless amount of times but, the most embarrassing  thing is being told you are to fat to do something. Once at Disney Quest I was told I was to fat for the virtual roller coaster but, the young woman who informed me was super nice. She did her best to try and get me into the ride and when I didn’t fit she handed me a ticket to pass the line at another ride accompanied with a huge endearing smile. Maybe the girl at Disney Quest was really nice or maybe that was a well applied lesson from the Disney World boot camp about tolerance.
I didn’t have the same hopes for the folks at Southwest though because if they were throwing fat people off their aircrafts just for being fat and for no other reason then I knew they would be ruthless when it came to me.
However, a couple days later I had sucked it up and prepared to buy my two tickets. When I went to my computer the Southwest website wouldn’t let me order two tickets under the same name. When I called Southwest I was informed that because the last time I flew I could fit in the seat and seat belt that I would be fine with one seat. I was so excited because one ticket means more money for clothes but to be honest I’m still a tad nervous about my take off date because you never know until you get there how things will turn out but, it will certainly make for another adventure.  Do you have a similar experience? Can you relate? Let me know in the comments. Thanks for reading! :-)

Incase anyone wants to take a look here is the statement on Southwest airlines website about "customers of size".

Edited to say: This post was up for about five minutes earlier today but, a great commenter alerted me to a major name error and I didn’t want the post to stay up with that error so, I deleted the whole post to make some changes. Thank you to that commenter. :-)

The Wild Wild West! (Outfit)

Sunday, February 21, 2010

Like everyone else I am dying for spring to get here so, one day when I went to my moms house to take pictures for the blog one of the looks I included was a spring look. Now if you know anything about Chicago weather you know there was no way I could wear this outfit outdoors but, I thought this would be a good preview sort of thing. This is nearly identical to a outfit found in the Torrid Spring Fling look book. To be honest, of the looks they featured this was the only one I could see myself wearing. When I got these pieces it wasn't with the intention of getting the same outfit but, it wound up that way. The denim, plaid, and boots make me think of a Western Theme and I love it! J over at fatshionable just did a denim on denim Western OOTD check it out here.

As oppose to just featuring bloggers on my blog roll I thought it would be a good thing to not only link you to the blog but give you a glimpse into the person behind the blog.

So, meet 18 year old mental heath nurse student and blogger behind fat nurse, Devon.

Designer Interview Series: Angie Johnson of I Heart Norwegian Wood

This is part 2 to the designer interview series. Because there a whole new crop of independent designers that are catering the young, hip, fat, fashionable women like me and you I thought it would be a good idea to give you guys a little insight into the person behind the clothes as well as some information on some new spring lines.
29 year old Canadian designer Angie Johnson is best know for her Top Shop line and the cage skirts she sells via her etsy store, I Heart Norwegian Wood. Her designs extend beyond skirts to fringe necklaces and harnesses. The great thing about Angie’s designs is that for an $5 surcharge she will create custom versions of her designs to fit most sizes. I have had the pleasure of working with Angie on two pair of custom leggings and she has been more then helpful and accommodating in the process. I am very excited to see what Angie has planed for the spring/summer seasons. Her etsy shop is currently closed so she can work on new projects but, it should be reopened March 1, 2010.

Topic of Discussion: Personal Style?

Saturday, February 20, 2010

Personal style is always hard to define. What do you compare yourself to when being asked about your personal style? If you don't always have the same look every day how do you describe your personal style when put on the spot? Usually I can only manage to say that I like bright colors and head pieces and reference a few people I admire. I have never been able to give an accurate, in depth description.  Sometimes I even question whether I have a personal style. I mean I certainly do know what I will not wear but, I can never manage to get a good handle on exactly what I will wear when being asked.

My possible reasons for being stumped about my personal style are:

1.) Maybe there are not enough options. We all know that plus size clothing options are limited so, how can you accurately express your personal style when you don't feel like you have all the right resources?

2.) Impulse buying. Sometimes you can find your self just buying things because at the time they look cute but, later on you think,"why did I buy this?" Still though, you're stuck with it and since you brought it you feel obligated to wear it. The problem is when you do you may not feel like you're expressing your self accurately.

3.) Somethings are just simply undefinable. If you're rocking a bright pink dress with leather studded wedges one day and then a peach t-shirt dress with a pair of flats the next how do you define your personal style them? Does this sometimes make you feel like you have no personal style?

4.) A lack of prominent plus size fashion Icons. While there are many straight size fashion icons that we all take queues from,  that inspire us, and that we rate as fashion icons wouldn't it be great to be able to compare your self to a plus size icon other then the obvious choice of Beth Ditto. There are a few more plus size ladies out there with iconic style but, how many of them are know as well as Beth Ditto? I mean don't get me wrong I love her and she is certainly on my list of icons but, I'm just saying wouldn't it be a lot easier to reference your personal style if you had more people that looked like you to reference? Maybe, maybe not. I'm just tossing out ideas here.

So this weeks topic of discussion is: How do you define your personal style when you are asked? Is it hard because you are plus size or just hard in general?

Item of the Week: Asos Curve Oversize Drop Armhole Dress

This weeks item if the week is the ASOS Curve Oversize Drop Armhole Dress.

The first previews of the ASOS Curve line were ok but as the line expands the pieces seem to be getting better and better. This dress fits right in with the over sized trend that has been so popular for straight sizes as it is reminiscent of pieces featured in the ASOS main range.

I have this dress on order currently so, I have not tried it yet. However, the pieces I have tried from the curve range all appear to be well constructed and of good quality so, I’m sure this dress is no different. Oversized clothing is great for it’s comfort factor but, you can belt the waist  (as seen in the image) and still be fashionable. I am really into the oversized trend myself and while this dress isn’t up to my usual bright color standards I have thought up some ways to brighten it up using accessories. I have a great bright blue bag planned for it.

Here is the bag. I ordered it from urban outfitters on sale. I would love to link you to it but, it's sold out.

While I plan to accessorize it with bright colors I think this dress works for a variety of styles. You folks that are into that rock star chic look can jazz this up with some studded booties and a studded belt and folks that want a more chic look may opt for some pumps and a clutch.

I hope to wear it on the plane to NYC next month along with some other new purchases. When I have images I will be sure to pass them along. So, tell me ladies do you like this dress? How would you wear it?

Thrifting For Valentines Day! (outfit)

Monday, February 15, 2010

Yesterday was valentines day and I had 3 valentines. They were Nik of Mezzo Fashionisto, Cid of  Chunky  Curlz and my bestest friend Britney so, I'm very happy about that. :-)

For valentines day me and Britney went thrifting and had mexican food! Yumo! Today's thrifting trip was fruitful in some ways and not in others. We went to the Village Discount located at 2032 N. Milwaukee Av. in Chicago. Today the colors blue, yellow, and pink were half off or 3 for a dollar. I say that my trip a success because I got a Guess denim jacket for $10.00, a Eddie Bauer plaid shirt for half off which made it $0.90, and a pair of leather oxfords for $3.00. Britney also showed me her vintage Christian Dior coat she found a few weeks ago at a thrift store which was a treat; it is in great condition! Our guess is that it was left in the dry cleaners and never picked up so they gave it away.

Anyways while I found some great finds today, the thrift store was huge and very unorganized. There were things everywhere. This place even had a "plus size section" but nothing in it was plus sized. There were hardly any dresses and most of everything there was plain. I have heard some good reviews about this village discount so, maybe this was a off day?

My finds were from the mens side.  The Guess denim jacket is a XXL in mens. The fit is great apart from the fact that it doesn't close. If it was a full price item  I would have left it but, for $10.00 I decided to get it seeing as though I never plan to wear in closed it anyway. They did have another one there that was a 3X. It was a different brand and lighter wash of denim that I didn't like so I didn't get it.

This Eddie Bauer plaid shirt is great. Its nice and soft. Its a XL in mens. It fits well, a little baggy in sleeves but, otherwise great! I seem to have great luck with mens plaid shirts. I thrifted a great looking Ben Sherman one last year to!

My oxfords are great . They are mens as well and they are a little distressed which is just the way I like them.

If any of you are wondering why I have been thrifting a lot lately it's because I haven't been coming across a ton of money and the money I have been getting I want to make stretch. Therefore, I'm getting back into thrifting and trying to mix old things with new things. This is also a great way to still be a shopaholic but, on a budget.  You can see other thrifted finds and check on my thrifting tips here. Here is what I wore to thrift. This is a good thrifting out fit because if you take off the cardigan you can just slip what ever you want over it because it's just leggings and a t-shirt. I also I love my I heart Norwegian wood leggings. They are a custom fit and get a thumbs up for being well made and comfortable!

Outfit Stats:
Cardigan: Shane
Shirt - Asos
Leggings - I heart Norwegian Wood
Shoes - 43g

Please let me know in the comments if you like reading about my thrifting trips. If you do I will keep them up and if not I won't! Hope you like my outfit! :-) Tomorrow I head to Unique Thrift Store  for the 50% sale. Wish me Luck!

Running Errands! (Outfit)

Sunday, February 14, 2010

Hey everybody! This is what I wore yesterday when I went to target with my siblings and mother. It's snow every where here in Chicago so, I wanted some color in my outfit. I'm also loving the ruffles ( I have that skirt in 3 colors). The boots are from Torrid and I have to say I don't recommend them. It was my second time wearing them and they are not comfortable at all. I have them in a size 12 and the fit is fine they are just uncomfortable. This also my first time trying we love colors tights. I started with a basic black pair just to see how they would fit because I have had nothing but trouble with tights in the past. They fit wonderfully. I have had them on a couple hours and they did not slip or fall down. They were easy to put on to; I didn't have to heave hoe to get they up and on. Because I am a 24/26 I ordered them in the EE size. I also like to pull my tights all the way up so, that size helps with that. They also feel very durable and they are very opaque. At any rate here are the pictures.

Lisa Bonet as Denise Huxtable

Friday, February 12, 2010

While the Huxtable family was brought to us through the Cosby Show to represent the perfect, upstanding African American family  the Huxtable children were always allowed to express their own individual style. Most notable for her fashion contributions was Lisa Bonet as Denise Huxtable. Denise's style was all over the place yet every outfit still felt like her. Throughout the Cosby show years we saw her in oversized clothes, mens wear, patterns, work suits, pearls, and lace just to name a few.

Watching reruns of  Denise on the Cosby show inspired me to take fashion risk. My love for oversized clothing stems from her influence and I rock it even though to some it's not plus size friendly. I always  enjoyed that her interesting taste in clothes was never a issue. I can't recall another character making fun of or having a off comment about one of her outfits it just was what it was. Thats my hope for fat fashion. One day I hope fat girls in fashionable clothes will be the norm to everyone.
Below I have put together some pieces that I feel can help us fat girls snag some of Denise's style.
