Who You Gon Be Fa Halloween Girl?

Sunday, October 31, 2010

This year I decided not to wear a traditional costume. I am one of those people that despises package costumes and once I decide on an idea I end up spending way to much money. This year I decided it would be cool to dress like another blogger. Last night I asked my twitter soulmate(LOL..inside joke) Franceta of Frantic Dreams if she wanted to dress like one another. She agreed, so here goes nothing.

I tried to replicate her outfit as best I could with the pieces I had and even tired to pose like her. Check out Franceta dressed like me here.

Topic of Discussion: Hair Today...Gone Tomorrow...

Most of you know I shaved the left side of my head last week. Generally speaking the response was great or maybe the people who hated it just choose to keep their opinions to themselves. Who knows? In the mist of the “It looks so great” praise there were a few “You’re so brave; I could never cut my hair” comments peppered in. This made me think, Why are girls so emotionally attached to their hair? Because the truth is I didn’t feel very brave at all. My stylist snipped the length off and cut it low, the next day I had a barber cut designs into it and well..that was it.
I kind of wish I had a Make Over Episode of America’s Next Top Model type story to tell you about my hair cut. It would be much more interesting to read. You know the kind I mean. Like maybe I sat down in my stylist’s chair and before I could even form an opinion I was being told by my stylist what hair style worked best for my hair in relation to my face. I disagreed..she kept persisting. I cried a million tears while simultaneously embarrassing myself in front of the salons other inhabitants. She cut the length of the side off before I could protest. My heart rose to the middle of throat and kept beating there forming nervousness and eventually manifesting into a nervous break down.
Although it didn’t happen that way I still can’t help but wonder again why girls are so attached to their hair? I can tell you that in the past no matter what hair style I had I always needed my hair around my face. I’ve worn everything from micro braids to weaves to my natural hair and no matter what the state of the hair I would never wear it in a  ponytail or anything similar. I was convinced I had a large, fat face. My family weren’t helpful in this regard in fact they encouraged the theory. It was up to me to find the confidence to make changes to my hair.
I just realized my face is fat and large! It will most likely look that way no matter what I do to my hair, so when I was 17 I cut my hair super short and dyed it a brownish blonde. Everyone at school kept asking me, “Are you ok?” They thought I had lost my mind. I hadn’t, but I did feel so much freer not hiding behind my thick hair. A year later I started getting weaves again, grew my hair out, wore it long for a while, and now I’m bald on one side. Guess I don’t have much to lose now!
I asked the same hair question I’m asking here on twitter and many people spoke of pressure from society. I can’t say I’ve ever felt that. My Pocahontas dreams where completely internal and encouraged by my family, but I can’t say I felt like I needed to keep my hair long to conform to any sort of standard. My grandmother hates short hair, but she asked me to keep it long; she never pressured me. Now that part of my hair is short no one is acting weird about it; my family is just as ok with it as they were my long hair. So, can some one tell me where this pressure comes from? I mean Rihanna, Keri Hilson, Beth Ditto and Janet Jackson just to name a few have or have had short hair, so I don’t think it’s because of celebrities.
Let me know in the comments why are you attached to your hair or alternatively why don’t you care? Oh what crazy hair styles have you tried?

Make Time To Live Just a Little

Today felt like the twilight zone. Everyone kept going on and on about it being Indian summer because the news convinced them it was 78 degrees, however it didn't feel nearly that hot to me. It was still breezy enough for tights and a sweater. I know you may be tired of seeing me in this cardigan, but its my favorite thing right now(Im getting a leopard one soon..Im exited!). I have a grey one that I purchased when I purchased this black one. I thought it was lost forever, but it turns out my mother had it all along and was wearing it when I saw her today. I will get it back soon and show it to you guys.

In other news...I need new black tights. The ones I'm wearing are the We Love Colors pair that broke after I had them on for only 30 minutes the night of Fashion's Night Out. I had to put bike shorts underneath them today to make them work. I love the fit, so I definitely wish they didn't break in the thigh so easily. The "necklace" I'm wearing is actually the chain to the leopard print clutch I have in my hand. I'm really into clutches lately and knew the chain would never get used, so I repurposed it. Oh! I think Target still has the Dolce Vita buckle boots in stock. I get compliments everywhere I go and no one thinks they're from Target.

Today was one of the earliest days I've had in a long time. My best friend and I woke up at 6:00 a.m to make it to the grand opening of Forever 21 at Harem Irving Plaza. They were giving away gift cards to the first 200 people. We barely made it time for a gift card, but we get them. Sadly they were only for $10 each; some people received gift cards up to $210. We met two other friends, Ritchie and Britney, there to. So, on to my hair. Yesterday I had it done again relatively the same way, but I added a little change.

Do you like it? There's a heart in my head..lol..I love it...

This is what I wore out today. It was just something casual, but still fun! I layered a lace tank from the thrift and floral button down from H&M. I didn't just want to throw a random white tank underneath; I think it worked. I paired the top with these great harem Trousers from Evans; they're oversized, so they fit just the way I want them to. My necklace is actually a wallet chain from my grungy hot topic days. I love that I could repurpose it.

The other day I saw a restaurant on Food Network called Franks N' Dawgs. The slogan was "5 star dining on a bun". That sold me, so today my friend and I decided to give it a try. This is what I wore out. It's just simple and casual. I barely got away with this outfit, it was in the mid 50's today. I will say I am loving high waisted bottoms with crop tops; I scored this one on the Urban Outfitters clearance rack in a size large. Also, I'm loving this Igigi pencil skirt; It's so comfy. I look a little sad. I wasn't! The food was good and I had a great time with my bestest!

It's officially fall! It's chilly out and the leaves have started to fall. I love it! Any who, over the summer
(around July) the lovely people at Pure Energy for Target sent me a few samples from their up coming fall line (since then released). I never had the opportunity wear any of the pieces until now. When I first pulled the pants out of the package I said, "Oh no! I should have said I didn't wear pants". However, upon trying them on I really enjoyed the fit. Although they have a button and zipper they fit more like leggings.

I paired the "pants" with an oversized vintage top; I love the fall colors. I'm not a fan of just sticking a big, wide belt over everything. In fact I hate that, but I took a chance and I think it works great. It's chilly, so I wore my naKiMuli cardigan. Finally, I added my Dolce Vita for Target shoes. I love that these went up to a 12. If you're foot isn't super wide they'll fit great. Whenever I wear these no one thinks they're from target.

Just Around the River Bend

This is a outfit I took pictures of last week, but never posted. I don't know why; I guess I just got distracted. I love this outfit though. I love vintage clothing and it's definitely a trend. Being on the larger side of plus it can be a little harder to find vintage clothing, so when I came across this dress I had to have it. I threw on my usual combat boots and a fedora to bring my style to the dress.

Last month Christina and I were up at 5 a.m in the morning of the One Stop Plus fashion show trying to find something for me to wear. I tried on nearly everything I owned before we found a outfit Christina approved of. Sadly I ended up not liking the look and realized it was too hot for a velvet skirt and leather jacket. When I arrived home in Chicago I tried the outfit on in front of a full length mirror and I really loved the look. In Chicago summer seemed to be back with a vengeance the past few days, so today was the first day cool enough to wear the outfit out.

Laughing with a Mouth of Blood...

Saturday, October 9, 2010

Yesterday I went to get my hair done for the first time since I've been back in Chicago. Rather then get a basic curl or straight style I figured since I was paying why not change it up a bit, so I got a faux hawk. Why a faux hawk? Well when I was 15 my sister braided up the sides of my hair in cornrows with designs into a faux hawk and curled the middle and I really liked it. After that though I became the girl that wanted length over style. I would never curl my hair tight because it made my hair look shorter, but now although I didn't cut my hair I want style over length. I also seemed to think my face was too fat for a short style; my mind has since changed.

While I don't wear make up often I do have a little bit that I throw on every once and a while.  I am wearing Professional Paris Make Up Forever High Definition Foundation #170 , Urban Decay SkyScraper Multi Benefit Mascara , and Sephora Lip Attitude - Star Plum Vertigo 12. I don't know enough about make up to wear Eye Shadow and liner yet...maybe next time?
