Best of Fat Shopaholic in 2010

Thursday, December 30, 2010

2010 seems like it was endlessly long. I did so much this year. I finished my second semester of college, I moved to New York, I moved back to Chicago, I blogged, met amazing people, partied, read the Southern Vampire Series, got into thrifting, got a cat, listened to great music and had lots of fun. While I was doing all of that I wore somethings I rather enjoyed, so I thought I would do a recap of my favorite posted outfits.

Since I don't music blog anymore I thought I would post my favorite albums and mixtapes of the year here.

Robyn -  Body Talk (Parts 1 - 3) Robyn This is the kind of pop music you won't feel guilty about listening to. The lyrics are great and you will dance all night long.
Erykah Badu - New Amerykah Part Two: Return of The Ankh  Erykah Badu always has some interesting things to say about love that I can really relate to, so this album is a win.
LCD Soundsystem - This is Happening  I love the lyrics on this cd; they are so funny. Plus you will dance all night if you give it a listen.
Kelis - Flesh Tone Clearly I was trying to dance my way through the year because this is another one of those dance albums with good lyrics.
The Black Keys - Brothers The Black Keys kind of remind me of Cold War Kids (I played and play Loyalty to Loyalty to death), but I think The Black Keys are a bit more toned down and smooth.
JoJo  - Can’t Take That Away From Me This is a mixtape, but it could totally be a album.  Great R&B music.

Monica - Still Standing Definitely the best R&B album of 2010
Supertoy - Panther This is the only rap album to make my list. I really like rap that takes a different approach. I love the production and the fact that I can relate to the lyrics.
Sleigh Bells - Treats I love new approaches to pop music. This is not over produced, dreamy music; t's loud and guitar heavy instead.
Vampire Weekend  - Contra I don't have a very specific reason for liking this album so much other then the fact that it's catchy as hell.
Joanna Newsom - Have One On Me  Joanna kind of reminds me of early Regina Spector ( 11:11, Soviet Kitsch) because the lyrics on this album are very unconventional. Both Joanna and Regina show that show that good lyrics can be about more love and lost; they can tell stories.

These are albums I'm listening to, but am not sure if I'm completely in love with yet.

Super Toy - You Love it
Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings - I Learned the Hard Way
Kanye West - My beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy
Laura Marling - I Speak Because I Can
Janelle Monae - The ArchAndroid

What were your favorite Fat Shopaholic Outfits in 2010 and what were your favorite albums?

I know I have been posting a lot of outfits lately, but I am trying to take advantage of the fact that my mom's house has painted walls with nothing on them and the fact that my sister is here to take my photos.

There are so many things I like about this outfit, so how about a list?

1.) I love the bright colors. I wear bright colors all the time, but I love pops of color in winter when everything is white and most people have on black coats.
2.) I love the prints. Lately I haven't really been wanting to wear plan t-shirts under my patterned jackets and blazers which is why I wore this thrifted lace shirt. I am currently in the market for more patterned and/or textured t-shirts.
3.) I love that this outfit is cheap. Not every fashion blogger is spending them selves silly to "keep up". Great pieces can be found for pennies. Literally.  The blazer was $0.90, the skirt was $2.00, the top was $1.00, the earrings were $1.00. the hat was $5, the bow (side of the hat) was $1.50, the leggings were $25, and the boots were $35. Plus who doesn't love a good bargain.
4.) I love that this outfit is remixed.  Everything I wore here apart from the skirt I have showcased on the blog before because I don't just take a photo of something and toss it to the way side. I like to show how I incorporate pieces from my wardrobe into multiple looks. I reused the accessories I wore with my christmas outfit because I'm at my mom's house and don't have access to my whole closet. I think it works though.

By the way I was featured on Marie Denee's Top Ten Best Dressed Plus Size Blogger's of 2010 here.
I was also featured on Urbano Cartel with two other bloggers here.

Thanks to everyone that commented on my last two post. I'm glad everyone loved my looks and the improved photo quality. :-) Also, Thanks to Lane Bryant for commenting on my Christmas post. It's nice to have the clothing manufacturers like your look..

Falling Like The Rain So We Ain't Running Out...

My best friend Britney and I went out today for national giftcard day. I call it that because there are so many sales today to encourage people to use the gift cards they got for Christmas. Thrifting was a bust, but i did get a studded vintage shirt, a few bracelets and a couple bows from some local recycled clothing  stores. While I was out I wore my leather bomber jacket from Jessica London. I added my vintage brooches to the jacket to make it a little more me and paired it with the fur leopard print earmuffs and mittens my mom got me for christmas. I kept the rest of my outfit simple to make trying on clothes easier.

I love nearly everything about this jacket. It's 100% leather and much warmer than I thought it would be. It certainly has been holding up to the Chicago winter well in the month or two I've had it. There haven't been any frayed seams or rips. I sized up and got a 28 because I read that this jacket was a little tight across the back and I wanted enough room to fit a hoodie or sweater underneath. Sizing up definitely solved the minor fit issue. I will say I wish the sleeves were a bit longer; I like my sleeves to end where my hands begin. I solved that problem by adding a hoodie underneath for extra warmth and sleeve length. Over all this jacket is a win; I wear it everyday.

How are you keeping warm this winter? Did you do any after Christmas shopping?

This is the outfit I wore on Christmas for a day full of presents, family, fried turkey, and gumbo. I know a lot of people have this Beth Ditto dress, but I just can't get over the fit and the cut. I think the draped pockets are my favorite part. I added my moms gold Joan Rivers watch and a great thrifted clutch. I was very surprised by the Lane Bryant fishnet and lace tights. I ordered the largest size they had, but I definitely should have sized down. I love that they came up high, didn't slip down through out the day, and didn't break in the thigh.

I'm also playing with some of my christmas gifts in these pictures. My mother got me a Bare Minerals make up kit and Chanel Mascara which my friend Britney applied for me and a new camera lens. My grandmother got me speed light. I love the out come of the pictures using the new equipment. Also, my sister gave a tattoo for christmas with her christmas gift. I love it.

I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday. Did santa bring you what you asked for?

Don't Be Jealous of My Boogie!

Monday, December 20, 2010

Lately I've been really into sheer things and bodysuits. This bodysuit is from Evan's and is one of my favorites. Most of the bodysuit is a stretchy material, but it has satin paneling down the front and along the bra cups which is nice. Leggings or tights with shorts is one of my favorite go to looks, so I paired the bodysuit with that for a more casual look. I added this naKiMuli cardigan for a little extra warmth. I have been really into animal prints lately, so I asked Tennille if she could take the same fabric from the scarf in this post and make me a another closed wing cardigan. She did and it turned out great. I love my closed wing cardigans because people either love the volume (I love volume period) or they think they look like judicial rubes. I wish that it was warm out so that when I went out I didn't have to wear a coat over this outfit. I love the fall, but the winter sucks.

Blog Spotlight: Gazel of Bonjour Gazel

Sunday, December 5, 2010

My apologies to you all. I know there hasn't been a blog spotlight in a while. The truth? I'm a lazy bones. I hope to bring them to you regularly. Instead of every Sunday maybe every other Sunday? Which do you prefer? Any who on to the spotlight!

Hello luvs, can you believe it? It’s time for the 12th installment of the blog spotlight series. For the benefit of new readers to this blog new I will say I started the blog spotlight because with all of my responsibilities I can not give you all the “skinny” on fat fashion. There are many, many blogs out there. Many of which that I read that cover a lot of things that I do not. As oppose to just featuring bloggers on my blog roll I thought it would be a good thing to not only link you to the blog but, give you a glimpse into the person behind the blog.

So, allow me to introduce you to Gazel (pronounced Gay-Zul) the 20 year old student and aspiring high school teacher from the Philippines residing in Winnipeg, Canada behind the blog Bonjour Gazel.

Gazel is from a Filipino/Chinese mix family. She moved to Canada when she was 5 years old. Gazel is currently a university student and fully bilingual in French and English. She can also speak Tagalog and Mandarin.

I love the vintage quality of Gazels style. She mixes thrifted pieces with main stream labels to create at great easy style that doesn't take it's self to seriously.

My favorite quote from Gazel was "I've always been a shopaholic since I've been genuinely interested in clothes. So I guess the 8th grade my mom always took me shopping, it gave me a great feeling of joy from buying stuff and since then it's been stuck".
