Tiffany and the City: Adventures of a Fat Shopaholic. The New naKiMuli Studio!

Thursday, September 9, 2010

Today I went to DUMBO (Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Over Pass) to visit the new naKilMuli studio and have champagne (I brought Moscato though) in honor of securing the new space. It most certainly was a interesting trip. I was having a bad day and got some really bad news. In the mist of crying and trying to sort things out I was trying to get ready to go to DUMBO because I thought the festivities were from 5 - 7 p.m. After finally getting dressed and out the door then attempting to navigate my way around downtown Brooklyn I made it to the studio only to find out the shindig was from 7 - 9 p.m., so I was right on time!

The studio was huge and in a great building; Tennille has a lot planned for it and I can't wait to see the out come.

Here is what I wore. I shredded this Asos tee with see thru panels because it was stained beyond wear and I  thought with the shreds it would look cool and the stains wouldn't show up. I paired the tee with a mens plaid shirt I found at the Salvation Army for half off on Monday. It's a mens tall 4x, so it's long and baggy which I like. The skirt is a Torrid peplum skirt I had to alter because I lost weight. I like the idea of this skirt, but not the execution. The peplum doesn't flare out, so its not noticeable and the skirt kept riding up, but in the end I actually liked the bike shorts being visible; I think it played well off of the sheerness of the tights.

The pin on my vest has been there since I purchased it. The guy on 82nd street said he got it from a old Russia lady that wore it in the 20's. Lie or truth it is my favorite vintage pin. Finally the head wrap is a Erica belt (this style isn't available online yet) reminiscent of the American Apparel sashes I haven't worn in a while. I saw Tennille wear this as a belt on Facebook and asked could she make me one and she said sure! So happy with it! Oh and these Avenue sheers were very comfortable, but fell apart after one wear. No Dice!!

Headwrap/belt - naKiMuli
Plaid Shirt - Salvation Army
Shredded Shirt - Asos (DIY)

Tiffany and the City: Adventures of a Fat Shopaholic. Meeting Up With the Assumption None of You Want to Kill Me!

Wednesday, August 25, 2010

I know that the last few Tiff and the City post have been a little short in terms of text and that is because I have had a lot going on. The Tiff and the City post will be back it's normal story like greatness soon. Speaking of coming back..Blog Spotlight will be back every Sunday starting this Sunday the 25th with Franceta Johnson of Frantic Dreams.  Anyway, back to the issue at hand.

Sometimes when fellow bloggers or readers visit New York they ask if we can meet up and with the assumption that none of you want to kill me if I am free I do my best to make it. Courtney of http://tupieta.posterous.com/ who was also the runner up in the Re/Dress NYC modeling competition contacted me about coming to her Meet up/Tweet up at Re/dress. After various mini dramas I made it to the event last Saturday and met Courtney as well as her friend Deon. Courtney tried on clothes, we talked, and ate prochuttio, cheese, and crackers.

This is the nook we sat and ate in.

The ceiling! Cool right!?!

Erin, Shop girl at Re/Dress. I think they were tired of seeing me. I visited them Monday to take Britney, then again Thursday to sell some clothes from home ($177 in store credit go me!), and Saturday for the tweet up!

After Re/Dress we went to a all natural restaurant called Nature's Grill and had a great time.

Can you see the robots on my head band?

I finally got my glasses. They are from www.zenioptical.com I purchased two pair for $55 with shipping. I had polycarbonate lenses and anti glare coating added without it the price would have been about $25. The quality is great, try it out if you want cheap prescription glasses.

Then we went outside to take outfit photos.

Girl what?

My beat up oxfords from the thrift. They look at pickle, but I love them!

Details of the Jewelry.

Here is a video of us Deon took on his iPhone4. People here always say I have a Southern accent, but I never believed them until I saw this video! Holy Oprah!

Wednesday, June 23, 2010

Full figured Fashion Week is finally over. I must say I am sad but, relieved. Sad because it was great hanging with one of my twitter followers @peachclobber as well as the ladies behind The Big Girl Blog, Lovin’ My Curves, The Curvy Fatshionista and Musings of a Fatshionista nearly every day. I also met the ladies behind Diva in Deep Thought, Madison Plus, a Curvy Girls Guide to Style ,and Diary of a Mad Fatshionista. I am relieved because all this week has been Full Figure Fashion Week non-stop and I have been coming home every day worn out. While I am relieved now the work is not over Yet. I have runway pictures to edit, blog post to write, articles to turn in, and a intern to pick. I am tired just thinking about it! Because the runway pictures still need to be edited and water marked I want to share with you some personal highlights.

There is lots to talk about and lots of pictures to come. Click read more to enjoy!

Tiffany and the City: Adventures of a Fat Shopaholic. Mother's Day Celebration!

Sunday, May 9, 2010

Today is Mothers Day and I don't know if I will get the chance to see my mom today so here are some pictures of her.

I love you Tracy K a.k.a Mom! Happy mothers day!

Also my Grandmother (my moms mom) passed away this year. I miss you Shirley! I love you! Happy Mother's day!

This is from when we went to the Beyonce concert! That's my sister, CoCo.

While I didn't get to see my mom today I did go out for lunch with my dads side of the family. We had a good time talking and laughing. My grandmother (whom I live with) got a lot of presents. I felt bad that I couldn't get her a present but, I have no job and the money my parents normally give me is going toward my move. I love you mommy Mae; happy Mother's Day!

Today for lunch I wanted wear something causal but fun. I wore light blue jeggings from H&M with a purple "sexual" tee from American Apparel. For a added punch I wore a floral blazer I scored at the thrift store for $0.90! I was very happy with my outfit and how it turned out. Also, I am wearing all my own hair! No more weave! Here  are pictures from the afternoon out.

Tiffany and the City: Adventures of a Fat Shopaholic. Oh No, Not I. I Will Survive!

Sunday, May 2, 2010

On April 29th I took more hits then Muhammad Ali when he fought George Forman. I didn’t succumb to defeat though. No, I didn’t become heavy weight campion of the world but, I made it through the day. I didn’t cry and I didn’t weep. I didn’t stop in my tracks, blow up balloons, and hang streamers for a pity party for one.
The days shenanigans started at college. On Tuesdays and Thursdays there is a couple  that is enrolled in both my humanities and Biology classes. Every single time I walk into my first class (Humanities) they start laughing and looking in my direction. Usually I don’t pay it any attention; I just go on about doing the homework thats due or going to sleep (that class is boring and I can’t sleep at night). On April 29th I didn’t got to Humanities so, they didn’t get the chance to see me until I showed up late to biology. When I entered the class everyone was silently staring at there test and twiddling there pencils like just looking alone would inspire the answers to jump into there head. Even with the silence filling the room the couple couldn't making me their private spectacle. They laughed but, I didn’t bother confronting them; I set down and took my test.
I didn’t torture myself. I answered the questions I knew and guessed on ones I didn't. I turned in my test and left to go on break. The couple must have done the same because they left before I did. I stood outside the door waiting on my friends. While waiting I heard the voices of the couple. “Every time I see her I can’t help but laugh”, I heard the guy say. Then his girlfriend chimed in, “Yea, did u see her daisy dukes. Oh my God”. They were both laughing the whole time. Again I didn’t let it get to me. It was hard. I could have walked over there and asked them what their problem was but I didn’t.
When my friends came out of the classroom I told them about the incident and they immediately said things like, “Fuck em”, and “that bitch be bright red every day. she can’t tan”. I appreciated that they were willing to defend me but, I couldn’t bring myself to join in. This was college right? Even in high school I was not the type of person to respond to that kind of negativity. Ignorance is deeply rooted; nothing I could say in a short amount of time could reverse or erase that.
After break I walked back in the class room. The teacher was holding a discussion on immune systems and mentioned the medication that was aiding Magic Johnson in not contracting the AIDS disease. After the teacher made his comment one member the couple said, “He got AIDS cause he gay”. That moment reaffirmed for me that it’s not just me. I’m fat but, I’m not ugly; I’m beautiful. It just so happens that I encountered ignorance and that I can continue with my life contently.
What outfit caused all these problems? Well here it is in all it's plain, uneventful glory.

Hat - Urban Outfitters
Shirt - Asos
Black tank, shorts, brown cuff - Torrid
Earrings - naKiMuli
Leggings - Lane Bryant
Boots - Evans via Ebay
Bag - Urban Outfitters via The Ark Thrift Store
Watch, Bracelet, Bangles - All over the universe

After class I headed to the Ark Thrift Store for some much needed shopping therapy. The Ark received raved reviews from my best friend so, I decided to check it out. I hopped on the train and got off at the right stop. From there I used my iphone to lead down the right way on the six street intercetion. I navigate based on landmarks so, north, south, east, and west don’t mean anything to me. Which means I still went the wrong way. While walking down wrong street the high speed winds were blowing my hair all around my head and pushed my body forward. Then my foot hit a dislodged piece of sidewalk and that coupled with the wind sent me tumbling over.
Two women rushed out of a resturant to make sure I was ok while the homeless people on the corner laughed at me. One women said, “That wind ain’t no mutha fuckin joke” and a homeless man said, “Damn that wind knocked yo ass down”. Embrassment helped me make a quick recovery and despite my bleeding knee and finger I got up, walked pass the same people that watched me fall and continued hunting for the store. I found the store and while one thing bought didn’t fit when I got it home here are my finds.

Urban Outfitters! $8

Eddie Bauer $1.50

Oxfords! $8!

After the thrift store I walked back to the train and it was there I realized that I lost my Upass (Free transportation for college students). I looked for it  for 15 minutes before the train attendant just let me on for free. That was nice but I still needed to take one more train and a bus to get home. So, I had to get off the train, dip into my savings and get money for transportation. Also, my sister put regular batteries in my battery charger so they busted and ruined my charger which meant I had to buy another one of those to. I'm trying to move so, every small unaccounted for purchase is a huge blow to my savings.
I did it. I dealt with everything that came my way, ignorance, falling on my face, and a unexpected financial situation. When things come your way how do deal with it? Do you shut down, cry and feel sorry for yourself or do pick yourself up and keep going?
