Blog Spotlight - Jai of The Fat and Skinny on Fashion

Hello luvs. It's time for the 2nd installment of Blog Spotlight. For the new readers to this blog I started the blog spotlight because being a full time English student, managing this blog, and writing for a online magazine(not yet but soon) I can not give you all the “skinny” on fat fashion. There are many, many blogs out there, many of which that I read, that cover a lot of things that I do not. As oppose to just featuring bloggers on my blog roll I thought it would be a good thing to not only link you to the blog but give you a glimpse into the person behind the blog.


So, Meet Jai(pronounced Jay) a 23 year old Fashion Journalism grad student and the operator of the Fat and Skinny on Fashion.

Tiffany- What was the “light bulb” that went off or the situation that made you start your blog, the fat and the skinny on fashion?

Jai- I had been reading all of these fashion blogs for years, and I always thought maybe I should write one just for a hobby. Then when I finally did it after new years 2009 people actually started reading it, and I started meeting cool and interesting people online. Now I use my blog as a networking tool, something to enhance my writing skills, and I use it to just bring cool info to others Plus I like talking with the other bloggers. The fashion blogging community is full of very interesting people.

Tiffany- I have seen pictures and editorial post on your blog that feature “straight size” models. I have also seen some post that aren’t directly about fashion. Can you define the direction and target audience for your blog?

Jai- My blog’s name is The Fat and Skinny on Fashion. The tag line used to be Cultural Gumbo UMM-YUM! Basically it is a play on words. I give you the skinny-or fashion news and information-on fashion, and I also talk about fat and skinny fashion. Fashion is more than just a size zero. I plan on bringing my plus size information and brands on my blog in the new year. Also I brand my blog to the people like me who like everything that has to do with fashion. Fashion is an art, and all of the arts are connected. I talk about music, photography, and other types of art. Designers can become influenced by anything, and I want my readers to be informed. I also talk about my life every now and then too.

Tiffany- Because not all of your post are directly about fat fashion have you ever had any issues with one size group(fat folks or skinny folks)criticizing your decision to include post about both size groups on your blog?

Jai- Nobody has criticized my that I know of. If they did, I would be hurt for a minute, but not really care. I hate to sound pompous, but this is my blog and only I know my blog’s full direction. I don’t discriminate. I know fashion comes in all sizes, as do my readers, so I like to give everybody choices.


Tiffany- As a blogger have you received negative comments or emails regarding your blog in general?

Jai- I received two negative comments. I can’t remember the first one, and the second one was just some little high school student being stank. I really don’t care. It’s just a blog. I have more important things to worry about than a negative comment. Now my thoughts on this might change if I were to receive a particularly horrid comment. I might have to address something like that in the future as my blog grows, but my readers are awesome. They are some of the nicest people on the internet.


Tiffany- I haven’t seen any OOTD’s (outfits of the day) post on your blog. Is there a reason for that?

Jai- I really hate taking pictures. Well... I love being behind the camera and not in front of it. I feel like I am the most awkward model. LOL! I also do online grad school, and spend a lot of time at home now. When I do go out, I am rushed to get back home. I just put oh jeans and a tee. I have been so slack lately. I only get dressed up when I go somewhere important. I started to change that this holiday season. I started dresses differently when I go out, but I always forget to take my picture. SMH! I want to take more OOTD’s. Maybe that is something I will work on for the new year.


Tiffany- For other people that are looking to get involved in a fashion blog can u explain or define the amount of work it takes to create a post and manage a blog?

Jai- It takes a really long time to write a blog, even if you know what you are writing about. Some people write about whatever they want,or they create an editorial calendar. I do both because I post fashion news and that happens when it happens. I also like to post my thoughts on things whenever they come to me. I have a few posts that I try to do every week, like Bad Bish. Ultimately you have to find what works for you and know that having a blog is a lot of work. Tiffany- Has operating your blog opened up any new doors for your career as a fashion journalist?

Jai- Yes it has. I started an internship with plus size magazine Gemini Magazine. Someone found my blog on twitter, which has helped me a lot, and they asked me if I wanted to be their intern. I also get lots of other offers based on my photography and other writing based on my blog and my miniblog on twitter.com/thefatandskinny.

Tiffany- What are your long term goals regarding your blog? Plans to expand to a full website?

Jai- I don’t know what will happen in a year, but if I am still blogging and people still care about TFAS, I may expand to a full website. That costs money, so we will see how that goes. Hopefully I can still maintain a blog that people want to read without losing my voice. Maybe I will get some guest writers, and do another shoe week. I also want to do a beauty week, and report from fashion week. Thanks for interviewing me! :)
