Topic of Discussion: Plus Sizes confined to Only Dark Colors?

Monday, January 4, 2010

I remember as a child being told by my mother to only wear dark colors and to stay away from bright colors, bold prints and patterns. Now as an adult I love to stand out. Being fat already makes me stand out but, in addition I also enjoy bright colors, patterns, prints, and quirky accessories like huge scarfs and bows. But, that doesn’t sit well with everyone. Sometimes when I go out in public I’m stared at or laughed at. Even on this blog I have had people tell me that I’m to big for things like sequins.
I am often shocked that some people feel this way about plus size people in daring clothes. For years plus size clothing companies have only featured clothing in dark boring colors and now designers are slowly creeping up with daring options for plus sizes. But, even other plus size women like to criticize other plus size women in more daring clothing.
Even, Plus Size fashion icons that make best dressed list like, Beth Ditto, get criticized for having a daring personal style.

I have also had comments on the fit of my clothes. Lots of plus size clothes are long, baggy, and cover your arms. I like the exact opposite to that. Also, I love the body con fit. Clothes like that fit snug but your body is yours and if you don’t plan on changing it I say if you got it fault it.
'
Personally, I don’t let other peoples opinions dictate what I wear. I love to look at blogs for inspiration and get peoples feedback but, I would never change a outfit just because someone didn’t like it.
So, now I want your option. As a plus size women do you feel confined to only dark colors and baggy clothes?
Do you let other peoples comments determine what you wear or do you just wear what you want?

I personally think dark colors can wash me out. If I do wear them, I pair them with eye catching accessories or makeup. I also wear what I want meaning I wear what makes me feel and look good. You can't always listen to critics.

I totally agree with you! Many plus women would look better in color and fitted clothing but often people are just not used to it and make negative comments. It's up to us to change their visual asthetic. Wear your sequins girl!

tiffany, anonymous is being a jerk. don't thank her for that--hell i'm a professional proofreader and i understand spellcheck doesn't do it all the time, especially when you're tired. are they posting faboo pics of themselves in daring fashions? nooo. so they can click off.
anyways, i'm always called one of the most fashionable people in my office, and i wear short skirts, bare arms, low necklines (i'll top it with a big chunky necklace to cover the cleavage so i still feel professional) and crazy patterns all the time. i don't have many solids or basics (something i need to rectify) and i've avoided the full bodycon thing because i don't have the butt for it (you gotta have the butt for it), but i say right on to my big girls who do!
